We'll start with basic drawing skills, developing proportion, shading and composition. Then working step-by-step we'll develop a thorough understanding of oil paint and how to use it. Through a series of limited groupings of color we will gain a strong working knowledge of how color becomes light. As our mastery develops, spontaneous play becomes part of our repertoire -- One-on-one attention is given in a supportive and creative atmosphere.

PRACTICE PAINTING IN OILS

Composition as an ongoing discipline will be emphasized. Paint handling will be stressed. Spontaneity and risk will be encouraged!!! An opportunity will be provided to become acquainted with painting as a form of dialogue and inner discovery. Space is limited to eight participants - early registration is encouraged. EXPLORING THAT THING

Eight Session Course, Part Two: February 29 - April 25

Explore different ways of working with oils! Using still life and the figure we will experiment with different ways of pushing the paint around and pushing the edge of what a painting does. We will explore different ways of literally getting the paint onto the canvas and how to relate to what we see in unexpected and surprising ways. Thick? Thin? Goopy? How do we get our intuition into the driver seat and still deal with the stuff in front of us? How do we use accident as a creative doorway? Students will have the opportunity to become familiar with different ways of working and with their own intuitive sensibility. Risk and play will be encouraged! Space is limited to eight participants - early registration is encouraged. Open to all levels.

REGARDING UPCOMING LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOPS IN SUMMER 2011:

"When we think of plein-air painting we usually think of direct tonal investigation of the light and space and forms before us, establishing basic tonal relationships, finding the right color. Corot's exquisite small studies while in Italy always come to my mind. And of course, there are the Impressionists and Monet's great lifelong project exploring light and atmosphere. Monet took that foundation of tonal relationships and went somewhere with it - a destination that was impacted by specific questions that didn't only have to do with what he saw but also with what he felt and thought about what he saw. The questions he asked as he journeyed through his life, outdoors and in the studio, affected what he was looking for and how he painted. Monet's questions came out of an interaction between the objective world before him - nature, and his subjective experience, his own temperament and sensibility. Looking back through the twentieth century, what the Impressionists left us seems self evident, but of course it wasn't always so. A new way of handling paint was created, in response to exploring sensations inner and outer.

"As painters interested in direct plein-air painting from nature - what are some of the different ways we might explore light, space and form? What are our own questions? What unknown possibilities might come out of our own unique relationship with nature as we build upon traditional foundations?

"These are questions and pursuits that interest me, both as a landscape painter and as teacher. I look forward to exploring them."
